White Sox to retire Guillén's No. 13 in live broadcast surprise

Chicago White Sox broadcaster Scott Podsednik surprised former manager Ozzie Guillén with news of the team's plan to retire his No. 13 jersey during a live segment on the club's home opener Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field. Podsednik read from an envelope before the bottom of the third inning, announcing a special ceremony for Saturday, August 8, as Guillén wiped away tears and shared a hug with Podsednik amid fan chants. The public address system relayed the news to the crowd.

Guillén, a shortstop for the White Sox over 13 seasons, managed the team to its first World Series title in 88 years by defeating the Houston Astros in 2005. He has served as a team analyst since 2019. Host Chuck Garfien joined Guillén and Podsednik on the CHSN broadcast.

The franchise will retire Guillén's number as the 13th in club history and the first belonging to a manager. Guillén joked about receiving another bobblehead before Podsednik completed the announcement. He later expressed shock and gratitude to the organization.

The ceremony takes place Saturday, August 8.
