Chapman mouths expletive at Schmitt after Giants error
San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman appeared to mouth "Catch the f---ing ball" to first baseman Casey Schmitt during a mound meeting after an error allowed a run to score against the San Diego Padres. The play occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning at Petco Park, when Chapman's off-balance throw on a chopper from Xander Bogaerts sailed high but catchable and glanced off Schmitt's glove. The miscue let a runner from third cross the plate, extending San Diego's lead to 2-0.
Both players were charged with errors in the Giants' 7-1 loss on April 1, 2026. Chapman had made a sharp throw earlier in the third inning to nail Fernando Tatis Jr. at the plate on a grounder. Schmitt and Chapman went hitless, Chapman 0-for-4 and Schmitt 0-for-3.
The Giants fell to 2-4 with the defeat, amid a slow start to the 2026 season. Chapman later addressed the moment with reporters, calling it the heat of the moment and confirming he had spoken with Schmitt. "We're all brothers here," Chapman said. "I've already talked to Casey and it's all good."
Schmitt echoed the sentiment, saying he was not mad and owned the dropped throw. "That's my guy," Schmitt added. "He's always been in my corner ... I should have caught the ball. We're good."
